Background of the Study
Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that requires long-term medication management to control symptoms and prevent exacerbations. Medication adherence is critical in asthma management, but many patients struggle with compliance, leading to poor health outcomes. Nurse-led patient education programs have been shown to improve medication adherence. This study aims to evaluate the effect of nurse-led patient education on medication adherence in asthma management in Zamfara State.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of effective asthma medications, many patients in Zamfara State struggle with adherence to prescribed treatment regimens, which can lead to increased hospitalizations and complications. Nurse-led patient education has the potential to improve medication adherence, but its effectiveness in the context of Zamfara State is not well documented.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the effect of nurse-led patient education on medication adherence in asthma management in Zamfara State.
To evaluate the impact of improved adherence on asthma control and patient outcomes.
To identify challenges faced by nurses in promoting medication adherence among asthma patients in Zamfara State.
Research Questions
Does nurse-led patient education improve medication adherence in asthma management in Zamfara State?
How does improved medication adherence affect asthma control and patient outcomes?
What challenges do nurses face in providing effective patient education to promote medication adherence?
Research Hypotheses
Nurse-led patient education significantly improves medication adherence in asthma patients in Zamfara State.
Improved medication adherence leads to better asthma control and fewer exacerbations.
Barriers, such as patient resistance, lack of resources, and cultural factors, hinder the effectiveness of nurse-led patient education in promoting medication adherence.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on asthma patients in healthcare facilities in Zamfara State. Limitations include potential challenges in measuring medication adherence accurately and variability in the implementation of nurse-led education programs.
Definitions of Terms
Medication Adherence: The extent to which patients follow their prescribed medication regimen.
Nurse-Led Patient Education: Educational programs initiated and delivered by nurses to help patients understand their condition and the importance of medication adherence.
